Inpatient Hospice Care for Around the Clock Care

While most hospice patients will experience Hospice Care at Home or Respite Care, Inpatient Hospice Care is less commonly used. 

Inpatient Hospice Care and Continuous Hospice Care are the highest and most intense levels of care and are used by patients with severe symptoms that cannot be managed at home. Like Continuous Hospice Care, a patient is provided with around-the-clock supervision, with the difference being the setting in which the care is provided. Inpatient Hospice Care is provided in a Medicare-approved inpatient facility, while Continuous Hospice Care is provided in the patient's home. 

Please note that Inpatient Hospice Care is not a long-term residential solution. The benefit is for short-term inpatient stays until pain and symptom management are controlled(1), allowing the patient to return home for continued hospice care. Home Hospice of Georgia has several inpatient hospice home options available for our patient's use in Georgia. 

How does a patient qualify for Inpatient Hospice Care?

The following may qualify a patient for Inpatient Hospice Care:

• Complex and/or frequent wound care
• Intravenous medication requiring close monitoring
• Severe or uncontrolled pain
• Acute respiratory distress, having difficulty breathing at home.
• Constant diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.
• Bleeding often or uncontrollably
• End-stage agitation or restlessness
• Seizures
• Agitation
